Against the Fray: Pro-Vaccine Doctor
Paul A. Offit, author of “Autism’s False Prophets”, has had too many death threats to show his face in bookstores across the country. The hero of many doctors and pro-autism vaccine proponents hail his book as timely in this emotionally charged era.
Each side, pro and con vaccine, believes their side has the ultimate truth. Doctors like Offit, who believe childhood vaccines save millions of babies and childrens lives against measles, mumps, rotovirus and their ilk. Then there are parents and caregivers that believe the vaccines are the blame for children worldwide for developing Autism shortly after receiving the spate of childhood vaccines.
What’s the truth? There’s no way of knowing. Has there been a study, by an impartial third (or even fourth) party that has followed vaccines vs autism? Or researched and studied any unsual pockets of Autism cases to see if there is any correlation? I have no idea, but it would be interesting to note.
As Offit’s book details, numerous studies of thimerosal, measles virus and other alleged autism triggers in vaccines have been conducted, and hundreds of children with diagnoses of autism have undergone what he considers sham treatments and been “cured.” Both sides insist that the medical evidence backs them.
You must draw your own conclusion from the facts that are available to you. Don’t let yourself be suaded either way by emotional discourse, just the cold, hard facts.
